North East green cover rises: Forest report

There is good news for the northeast, one of the biodiversity hotspots in the world. According to the India State of Forest Report 2009, based on the biennial assessment by the Forest Survey of India, the total forest cover in the northeast region (seven states excluding Sikkim) has increased between 2005 and 2007.

"The forest cover in North East (NE) region has increased from 1,69,825 square km in 2005 to 1,70,423 square km in 2007, based on which the rate of increase is 299 square km per year for the period. The proportion of forest cover in the North East to the total geographical area of the country is 0.051 (5.17%)," Union minister of state for environment and forest (independent charge) informed the Lok Sabha.
