Expressing anguish over the failure of most state governments in releasing payments for the purchase of wind energy in time, Union new and renewable energy minister Farooq Abdulla on Sunday revealed that the centre would soon start cutting wind energy payment arrears from various central assistances meant for the states and directly pay to the companies engaged in the sector.
The companies which help the nation to get electricity must not suffer and the people must get power, he said while inaugurating a research and development wing of Park College of Engineering and Technology here.
Calling for more investment in the wind energy sector, Farooq pointed out that a substantial part of foreign exchange is being diverted now to import coal from Australia, South Africa and Indonesia.
"Coal prices are going up. It is important to maintain the equilibrium of the soil. We have to make use of various energies being provided by the sun, heat, light, wind, earth and water," he said.
"In the wind energy sector, we are the fifth in the world. We produce 17000 megawatts of power and the centre is committed to support wind energy producers. It is regrettable that state governments are not keen in clearing arrears of wind energy producers," he said.
