Indore based marriage gardens amongst worst polluters in Madhya Pradesh

About 20 marriage gardens from the Indore are among the worst polluters in the state along with nine stone crushers and granite units in Nayagaon area of Gwalior.
Cases of the pollution control board (PCB) against the industrial units and the marriage gardens violating the air and water pollution norms are on the rise in the state as these establishments are increasingly ignoring compliance of norms.
"These Indore-based marriage gardens have been polluting the underground water of the area besides, creating noise pollution. The stone-crushers have been creating air pollution and it is difficult to breathe in the area where these units are located", PCB sources pointed out.
Besides, the sources claimed, these units are being run without any permission from the PCB.
"We have to proceed against these units as most of them did not even make any provision to check air and water pollution", an MPPCB spokesman told TOI.
However, the board officials have a different point of view on the issue. PCB's chief chemist, Abhay Saxena said "As a routine, the PCB first sends a missive which is followed by strict set of directives to the industrial unit concerned.
"We move court as a last option. Mostly major industrial units comply with pollution norms, making no point to file a court case against them while small and medium units tend to ignore the norms", he said adding that the Board did not have any other option but to initiate legal proceedings against those units which do not even make provision for checking air and water pollution.
The other industrial areas are based around Pithampur and Mandideep-the industrial estate about 19 kms away from Bhopal.
As against a handful of nine cases filed in 2009-10, 42 cases for violation of pollution norms were filed in 2010-11 and the number is expected to swell close to 100 in 2011-12, sources said.
