Karnataka to launch Volvo 7700 series hybrid buses that run on diesel and electricity

Bangalore, Jan 29 (TruthDive):  The state of Karnataka will show the country a new concept of commuting with its idea of “clean and green” mass commuting. The state has decided to launch hybrid buses that run on both diesel and electricity in Bangalore.  The 7700 series hybrid bus made by Auto giant “Volvo”, unveiled recently at the Delhi Auto Expo has been selected for this purpose.

The news has been confirmed by the state’s transport minister R.Ashoka. “The Volvo 7700 hybrid bus, unveiled recently at the Delhi Auto Expo, will soon be launched in the city by Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC)”,Mr. R.Ashoka said.

BMTC would introduce the 105-seater bus that runs on diesel and electricity this month on a trial basis for two months.

The hybrid technology of the Volvo 7700 Hybrid is the leading environmental solution for buses in urban areas, and the only commercially viable hybrid on the market. Without compromising on performance, and still delivering emissions reduction by up to 50 per cent and fuel savings of up to 35 per cent, it is a truly competitive alternative for urban transport. They are environment-friendly and emissions are significantly less.

The hybrid bus has a diesel engine and an electric motor, which can be used either independently or jointly. The battery that drives the motor is charged through regenerative braking. The diesel engine shuts off when the vehicle is stationary and does not start again till the bus reaches 15-20 km per hour, thus saving fuel. This also ensures that the bus doesn’t emit exhaust fumes when it stops at traffic signals.

The electric motor of Volvo 7700 regains charge as and when the bus is required to apply the brakes. Just like the start/stop technology seen in larger executive sedans for conserving fuel, the diesel engine in the 7700 also switches off completely, which also helps create a silent and exhaust-free environment at bus stops.

While the company’s hybrid solutions have already been commercialized and are presently operating across 20 cities of the world with a proven track record, the 7700 Hybrid model is the first serial production model to implement this green technology.
