Thiruvananthapuram: Taking a serious view of the problems faced in different parts of the state due to slow disposal of solid waste, Kerala Cabinet today decided to set up waste treatment plants in all 14 districts.
The treatment plants would be set up with new technology which minimised the land requirement to a great extent compared to existing ones, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told reporters here.
He said the existing plants at Brahamapurm in Kochi and Neyliyanparambu in Kozhikode would be upgraded with the new technology. Regarding the waste disposal problem of the state capital, he said efforts were on to find a place to set up the plant in the district.
Under the new technology, there would be separate treatment unit to deal with plastics. Arrangements also would be made to segregate the solid waste from plastic waste at the originating place would also be made, he said. Referring to other Cabinet decisions, Chandy said it was decided to extend government guarantee for the Rs.10 crore loan to be availed by the National University for Advanced Legal Studies at Kochi from State Co-operative Bank.
An ordinance would be brought to amend the Kerala Farmers Debt Relief Commission to enable the commission to consider debts of farmers taken upto October 31, 2011. Now it can deal with debts of farmers taken till January 6, 2006 only.
