Solar PV project of the year


A solar power plant being built by First Solar Inc.and now owned by NRG Energy has been named the top photovoltaic utility project at an industry conference.
Solar Power Generation USA named the Agua Caliente project near Yuma as the PV Project of the Year. When finished in two years, the 290-megawatt power plant will be the largest photovoltaic utility scale project in the world.
Princeton, N.J.-based NRG (NYSE: NRG) purchased the power plant from Tempe-based First Solar (Nasdaq: FSLR) last year and received a $967 million federal loan guarantee. First Solar is continuing to develop the project for NRG.
Other winners were the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System, with investment from Googleand NRG Solar LLC, for Concentrated Solar Project of the Year; the Kaua’i Island Utility Cooperative was named Utility of the Year; and Soitec was named as Concentrated Photovoltaic Breakthrough Achievement of the Year.
