The 1.5 MW Sonapani Mega Watt hydel project will add to the Meghalaya grid. Meghalaya, once a power surplus state, presently generates 186.70 MW and has a share of 200 MW from central utilities.
Chief Minister Mukul Sangma Thursday stressed the need to address the power requirements of the state through renewable energy resources.
"Our requirement can be met through renewable energy resources and by leaving aside all those sources of power dependent on fossil fuel which contributes towards global warming," Sangma said.
Besides being one of the three oldest power projects in India, the Sonapani project was also an opportunity for the Meghalaya government to commission a power project in the state after over 30 years.
The Sonapani project was officially closed down in April 1982. After agreeing to revive it, the government began work in 2004. It was completed in 2009.
Meghalaya has decided to develop a chain of small hydro projects to meet the requirements of this mountainous state,
"We have identified 44 river basins for developing small hydro power projects to generate 483.70 mega MW of power," additional chief secretary in-charge of power B.K. Dev Varma told IANS. (IANS)
